The Gems of the Claremont Community Hub and Library

The Claremont Community Hub and Library will be proud owners of a new piece of artwork in the coming weeks, created by the most important artists of all – children of the Claremont community.

Throughout January, children (and keen adults!) will be taking part in workshops with local artist Sean Adamas to create a ceiling suspended paper sculpture installation entitled Gems.

Mr Adamas said the idea came from seeing chunky bead necklaces and resin jewellery with the concept then evolving into a crystal pendant installation inspired by the colours of the stained glass windows in the library area.

“I am aiming to fill half of the ceiling space of the Hub Meeting Room,” Mr Adamas said. “The arrangement will resemble an undulating pattern, creating a sense of movement to the installation.”

There are eight gem designs to select from. Participants will be able to customise their pieces with colouring-in, drawing patterns or even embellishing the gems.

“There is no ‘right way’ to complete the task, so children can test their creativity and ingenuity,” Mr Adamas said. “It will be a rewarding activity when, at the end of the workshop series, the participants can identify the pieces they have created and see their contribution in the final product.”

“A sense of ownership is essential in community art installations, and this workshop is aimed to nurture individuality, creativity as well as a sense of group achievement,” he added.

Town of Claremont Mayor Jock Barker said the installation was a great way to bring the community together.
“Having this bespoke piece of artwork, created by our families in the Community Hub really is the true sense of community,” Mayor Barker said. “I can’t wait to see the creative collaboration between Sean and the children of Claremont.”

There’s a range of other activities happening at the Claremont Community Hub and Library these school holidays, visit the Town’s website for more information.

The Gems installation workshops will be taking place on the 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th January 2021. Bookings for this community are project are essential.
