Eye of the Story

By Harriet Hockings

"The photograph 'eye of the story' represents being lost in a book. It's one of my favourite things to do - escaping the real world and entering the magic realm of fiction!"

Second place winner: 12 - 15 year old category

Circles of Light

By Kristina Palmer

"I experimented with the self-timer setting on the camera and using a slow shutter speed I was able to capture a moving self-portrait. I felt it was an abstract way of representing myself in visual form."

First place winner: 16 - 18 year old category

Sitting in Silence

By Violet Davis-Rohr

"Taken at North Cottesloe beach, on a warm summer evening. Sunset and a glass off, doesn't get much better!! I have titled it 'Sitting in silence' as I am imagining the two people out there, not saying a word, simply just appreciating their surroundings and soaking up the peace. I believe it represents the 'in your own world' theme because the space surrounding the silhouette is like a personal bubble, isolating them from the real world. They have everything they need, no wind, fishing rods and each other. I think this perfectly represents Australian culture, and how the beach is an escape for most, somewhere we go to take a break and breathe - to be 'in our own world'."

Second place winner: 16 - 18 year old category

Our World

Harrison Osgarby

"It was one of those humid dusks you get after a 40 degree day, the kind where the wind stood still and the sky was blood orange from the thick layer of smoke smothering the sunset as it went below the horizon. But before the last rays of light could run away, a distinct screech rolled over the eucalyptus, one I recognised from my childhood. You could hear the turbulence of their wings as they clumsily grasp onto a branch of an old decaying gum tree. Here on this bough their world is undisturbed by external chaos, a sanctuary of trust and closeness that reminds us of the beauty of finding solace in another, away from the distractions of the wider world, something I envy. But here they cower in a tree in a dog park, over 50km from where they belong, and only more will keep coming."

Resident Award

Lost in Thought

Imogen Mead (16 - 18 year old category)

"Walked the dogs up the hill to watch the pretty sunset."

Mayor's Award

Secret Garden in the City

Henry Gooch (16 - 18 year old category)

"I took this photo in the Jewel Singapore Airport. I loved the composition of the lights, plants and the window. Since it was very busy in the Jewel I was looking for peaceful spaces and this wall of plants made me feel in my own world. I was then able to make the green more vibrant and lights have more beam in post. No photoshopping was done but a colour grade was applied."
