Slide back into the 1970s with Claremont’s new exhibition

Do you ever wonder what our Town was like back in the day? Then boogie on down to the Town of Claremont Museum’s new exhibition, Made in the 70s, which will take you on a journey through Claremont’s cultural revolution during the groovy seventies.

The exhibition will showcase a variety of memorabilia, reflecting the disco era that saw the electric slide taking over dance floors. Meanwhile, backyard BBQS, beach trips and heading to Dunstan’s Hotel, now known as the Claremont Hotel were integral to the local way of life.

Simultaneously, the museum’s collection highlights the influx of new residents, including migrants at the Grayland’s Migrant Hostel, which was the catalyst for the creation of essential community facilities such as the Claremont Museum, Aquatic Centre, and Library.

Reflecting on this era, Mayor Jock Barker shared, “The 1970s were a period of significant transformation for Claremont and this exhibition reflects that. From changing streetscapes, flourishing art and culture, to welcoming families from all walks of life, it’s a fantastic exhibition.”

The collection can be viewed at the Claremont Museum from 3 October to relive the spirit of the 1970s and explore how this lively decade shaped our community.
