Winners of the Claremont Art Award announced

Over 140 VIP guests gathered at the Town of Claremont Administration building on Friday night to hear the winners to the seventh biennial Art Award announced.

First prize was awarded to Jane Tangney for her piece Koi Kyenu-ruff (Stirling Range). The judges said the work was a beautiful reflection of contemporary conversations about our landscape and history and evoked the sense of struggle in moving forward.

“I was thrilled to win First Prize – this being the first time I have entered” Ms Tangney said.

Mayor Jock Barker said supporting the arts community was more important now than ever before.

“A lot has changed since our last exhibition as COVID-19 has reshaped the world around us. However, one thing that did not change was the talent that exists throughout Claremont and the rest of WA, as reflected in the over 180 submissions we received for this year’s Art Award.” Mayor Barker said. “We had some truly outstanding works and I want to thank all those who submitted. It was tough job for our selection panel to narrow down a shortlist of 70 works.” he said.

Second place went to Shelley Cowper for her work titled The Night Watch and third place was awarded to Jasmine Raisbeck for her piece Protea on a gloomy day. The Claremont local winner was Pippa Lightfoot, with her charcoal drawing Chiaroscuro (sacred ground). Winners will share in a total prize pool of $10,000.

The awards were judged by a highly credentialed panel of judges including Dunja Rmandic, Acting Curator of International Art, Art Gallery of WA and Ron Nyisztor, Director Nyisztor Studios.
