Town of Claremont will be celebrating NAIDOC Week this year with a range of events and activities taking place throughout week, for both adults and children to enjoy.

NAIDOC Week runs from 3 to 10 July 2022 and invites all Australians to amplify the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to narrow the gap between aspiration and reality, good intent and outcome.

Mayor Jock Barker said, “NAIDOC Week provides the opportunity to support the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community of Claremont and participate more in their culture.”

With its rich Aboriginal history, Lake Claremont will be the perfect location for the Town’s NAIDOC Week Smoking Ceremony and Land Care talk with Noongar man Phil Walleystack, who will talk about traditional hunting and foraging techniques.

The latest mural in the Town will be unveiled as part of the week’s celebrations. The mural and story panel by local Noongar artist Julianne Wade is based at the newly renovated Claremont Museum.

Claremont Museum’s monthly History in a Coffee Cup event will host Noongar woman Lynette Coomer to talk about the camps of the western suburbs and there will be an additional Noongar Introductory Language session held at the museum with Noongar woman Sharon Gregory.

For the kids, a range of school holiday activities at Claremont Community Hub and Library will include them in the celebrations. A Look into Aboriginal Art with Mel Spillman, as well as a special NAIDOC-themed Storytime will showcase indigenous authors and stories whilst, for the older kids, a Beanstack reading challenge around indigenous books will keep them busy for the holidays. There will also be colouring in and craft tables setup for the week at the library, for all children to enjoy.
